PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR 2008/2009
It is with pleasure that I present to you my report as President of the Churchill Fellows Association of Queensland (CFAQ) for the period 2009-08.
The CFAQ commenced the 2008 year with an Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 1 April 2008. The AGM was held here (State Library of Queensland), preceded by a very pleasant catered, informal gathering of the Fellows and their partners. We concluded that AGM with a presentation by Sean Leahy (2000 Cartooning) who not only spoke of his experiences as a professional political cartoonist, but who all demonstrated his artistic skills as a caricaturist and humorist - a virtuoso performance with the pen!
I have been asked to convey apologies tonight from Committee members Katie Walker, Elissa Morriss and Angela Gardiner, who are presently away from Brisbane and unable to attend the AGM. Their commitments to their day jobs and to their families in no way diminishes their dedication and efforts on your behalf as active officers of the CFAQ Committee.
Sadly, Peter Berkeley elected as CFAQ Vice-President for the 2008-09 period had many professional and family demands upon his time this year, and these overwhelming commitments led to his resignation for the Committee towards the end of 2008. Elissa Morriss has acted in this role as need arose.
As you know, Jim O’Donnell (1993 Police Corruption) stood-down from the position of CFAQ President last year. This Committee acknowledges his legacy, and notes that his ‘CFAQ Management Committee Handbook’ continues to be an invaluable tool in keeping the CFAQ functioning smoothly. To our delight, Jim has volunteered to take up the role of CFAQ Date-base Manager from May 2009.
We have actively recruited for this year’s Committee, and have strong expectations!
The selections interviews for Queensland Churchill Fellows were undertaken in May 2008, and subsequently in April 2009. As always, the CFAQ membership provided previous Fellows to act as ‘mentors’ for the aspiring interviewees whilst they waited for their turn on the interview griller – a process many of us remember only too well! On our behalf I would like to publicly acknowledge those mentors Fellows who volunteered in this manner.
I am pleased to record that in 2008 there were twenty-two successful Fellows from Queensland. Their topics were as diverse as equine dentistry, medical service models in rural and remote areas, mass transit systems, the homeless, tissue and organ donation, allied health, and children’s theatre.
The Selection Interviews were undertaken again during the recent ANZAC Day weekend, with over 200 applications for Churchill Fellowships short-listed to 35 interviews over two days. The list of recommendations for Fellows has been forwarded to the National Office of the Winston Churchill memorial Trust (WCMT). The results of these deliberations will be made public in July 2009. You will all get to meet with them at the CFAQ Presentation Dinner planned for the evening of Friday 7 August 2009.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Justice Margaret White (as Chair) and fellow members of the WCMT Regional (Queensland) Selection Committee for the time, enthusiasm and expertise they devote to the difficult task of ranking theses hundreds of disparate but deserving applicants and projects. I would especially like to bring to your attention the tireless work of Barry Muche – who provides the Secretariat for this entire process: liaising between the Queensland Selection Committee, the CFAQ, the candidates and the National Office.
The presentation of Certificates of Award and Badges by Her Excellency Ms Quintin Byrce (AC) occurred at Government House on Wednesday 9 July 2008. Sadly, due to her transition in roles, the Governor herself was unable to attend the Annual CFAQ Presentation Dinner held on Friday 11 July 2008 at Tattersall’s Club in Brisbane. As fellow Queenslanders, we take this opportunity to congratulate the Queensland Governor on her elevation to the position of Australian Governor General. We look forward to our ongoing relationship with the new Queensland Governor - Ms Penelope Wensley (AO).
The 2008 CFAQ Annual Dinner was a great success, with just over 150 attendees. In addition to introducing the new Fellows to the Association, we celebrated and reminisced as Jim O’Donnell presented Medallions to returning Fellows who had successfully completed their Fellowships. Our after-dinner speaker was Brian Castles-Onion (1994 Music, Opera Conducting) - who regaled the audience with previously untold stories from the world of local, national and international opera.
As the Association was in a very sound financial position in previous years, the Committee approved that the cost of last year’s dinner be subsidised. It is likely that in the more restrictive financial environment of 2009, the capacity to subsidize will be reduced. Such issues will be a matter for deliberations by the new CFAQ Committee (2009-10). My expectation is that the Dinner may be a little more frugal this year!
In May 2008, Hilda Maclean (2007 Visitor Education in Historic Cemeteries) was kind enough to host a group of CFAQ Fellows on a visit of the historical Toowong Cemetery – a fascinating afternoon. As a person who spends much effort (personally and professionally) in keeping myself and others away from the graveside, I was very pleasantly surprised at the unexpected historical references, and the scenic and architectural beauty of cemeteries.
In August 2008, I spoke on behalf of the CFAQ at a Museum & Gallery Service Seminar for aspiring Queensland artists, and arts & museum managers. In a join presentation, I extolled of the benefits of the Churchill Fellowship along with speakers showcasing the Queensland-Smithsonian Fellowship Scheme and University of Queensland Field Trip & Master-class Program.
Our other formal event for 2008 was the annual CFAQ Christmas get-together. My wife Julie and I had the pleasure of hosting the event this year, which saw thirty Fellows, partners and children spend a very pleasant evening. The plan was potentially compromised by the passage of a tornado through our Brisbane neighbour the weekend before, but all went well – as power, water and sanity were restored just in time. Our guest speaker was Ann-Maree Willett (Millinery 2008), who recently returned from her study trip to Italy, France and the UK. Ann-Maree shared her European adventures and some tasty fashion tips. She brought along a selection of her stunning creations – a wonderful introduction to the mysterious art of millinery!
Our local Fellows continue to be influential at all levels of the Community, across many disciplines. Queensland Fellows have appeared in numerous newspaper, radio, television and internet articles in 2008, and will undoubtedly continue to be effective agents for community enhancement and change for many years to come.
Our CFAQ newsletters (which outlines many of these stories) continue to be crafted by the careful hand, and under the watchful eye of Jane Virtue (1987 Sailing Teaching), and are distributed several times a year to our loyal and enthusiastic CFAQ membership.
As always, the CFAQ Committee acknowledges all contributing Fellows and the support of the WCMT throughout this 2008-09 period.
In conclusion, I thank you all for the privilege of representing you as CFAQ President. I cannot praise the efforts of the Officers and Committee member of the 2008-09 CFAQ Committee highly enough - . their work in the context of their busy work and family lives has been outstanding! I ask you to demonstrate your appreciation of their efforts on your behalf in the traditional manner!
Angela Gardner is away from Brisbane for most of the 2009 period due to work opportunities, and I have encouraged her to re-nominate next year. So it is au revoir rather than goodbye from the Committee to Angela! The other members of the present Committee have agreed to stand for re-election; and furthermore we have garnered the support of a number of new Committee aspirants.
I ask you all to continue to give your support and understanding to the New CFAQ Committee 2009-10. These words of Churchill capture some of the spirit of the Committee:
“Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joys and glory of the climb.”
Finally, please note that we have the privilege of Rhyl Hinwood’s presentation of her life and working as an internationally renowned sculpture – surely an inspiration to us all.
